History of Mt. Pleasant General Baptist Church

In 1908, Bro. Sam Carter, a minister from the Mt. Union Association, held a revival at Bethal Methodist Church, in the Happy Hollow community.  At the conclusion of the revival, several people expressed an interest in forming a General Baptist Church and soon Bethel General Baptist Church was formed.  The name was soon changed to Mt. Pleasant General Baptist Church.  Bro. Carter was called to be the first pastor.

Land was donated for the original church and it was erected on the site where the parsonage now stands.  The first service was held in the church building in January or February of 1909.  The dedication service was held sometime around association time in 1910.

Mt. Pleasant joined the Mt. Union Association in 1909.  By 1921 the Mt. Union Association had grown so large that it became almost impossible to conduct the meeting and take care of the huge crowd.  Therefore, Mt. Pleasant and none other churches in this area were granted letters and organized the Portland Association.  Mt. Pleasant began full time preaching services in September 1954.

Through the years several improvements were made to the original church building.  Sunday School rooms were added to the original building in 1950, 1956. 1959 and again in 1965.  The church voted to build a new church structure in June of 1969 and the first service was held on January 11th, 1970.  Services continued in that church for the next 26 years.  On February 18th, 1996, the church held a ground breaking ceremony for the current building and a crossover service was held October 5th, 1997.
